Thimblefuls
Hi poets.
I hope your summer is proceeding with good reading and good writing.
The reason I’m emailing you today is to gauge interest in you taking a short poem online workshop, Thimblefuls. This class would be fewer weeks and tighter focus.
Focus:
Part of the class would, naturally, be haiku, but also other short and minimalist poems in English from worldwide arrived at by erasure, portmanteau play, or brevity. What brings it to that balance of density, delicacy, and effectiveness? What takes short poems from so-what to memorable or transformative?
Writers include: Sheila E Murphy, Cameron Anstee, Rohini Gupta, Divya Victor, Philip Rowland, Emiko Miyashita, Chiyo-ni, Lenard D Moore, Cherie Hunter Day and many more.
Time, place:
The workshop would run for 4 weeks in August. (The day of week is to be determined. Because it online, it can be drop in according to your schedule.)
The hosting site, Canvas, can house all the readings, assignments, sharing, and discussions in a private forum.
Format:
A series of exemplars, exercises, discussion and sharing new work in a safe environment.
Cost:
Once a week for 4 weeks with a sliding scale of $50 a week for fewer than 5 people enrolled, or $25 a week for 10 or more registered and paid. So $100-$200 per person. There's a sliding scale of pwyc available because the more the merrier.
Spread the word:
If you know someone who may be interested, please pass this along.
Let me know of interest before July if you can. If there's a preferred month, let me know. February next year is possible.
Errata: For those of you who were in the 2016 class, a correction. The Audre Lorde Questionnaire should have attribution to Singapore poet Divya Victor. I encourage you to check her out. She’s doing interesting work, including minimalist poems.
btw: if anyone can tell me how to change my address in mailchimp at the bottom here let me know.
Keep reading, keep writing, and keep breathing thru these terrible political times.
